Prayer

art is prayer,
i told my mother
when she asked if i pray
and i showed her
my pysanka
seven days
before Easter

work is prayer
when done in love
i told a girlfriend after
she asked if i pray

cooking
writing
painting
sculpting
foreplay
dancing
making love
swimming
running
yoga
singing
is prayer
i told a lover
when he asked if i pray

i fed him herbs and spices
i wrote him poems
i danced around the house
wore only my skin all day
pulled him closer to my lips
we kissed with tongue
on the four rugs i stitched together
we made love
slowly and soundly
speaking in moans and gasps
and pounding

isn’t this prayer
i asked him

he knelt
and dove deep
as if he’s never
coming back

when you’re
on your knees like this
deep into someone you love
there’s never a way out
